The silent error after a successful import
A catalog CSV may be accepted while variant assignments, inventory quantities or price fields have changed unexpectedly. Verify what the import changed, not just whether the upload completed.
Preserve identity before mapping columns
- Save the original supplier export and a copy of the target import template.
- List stable product and variant identifiers—including SKU and option combinations where applicable.
- Verify one-to-one relationships before and after transformations.
- Compare numeric fields on each record rather than relying only on a catalog total.
- Review newly duplicated or missing variants before publishing products.
Example: balanced inventory hiding wrong variants
| SKU | Before | Candidate |
|---|---|---|
| SHIRT-BLUE-S | 4 | 7 |
| SHIRT-BLUE-M | 8 | 5 |
| Total | 12 | 12 |
The total is unchanged, but both SKU-level quantities differ. Whether those changes are authorized must be checked against the source record and import plan.
Shopify's accepted CSV columns and import behavior depend on the current product workflow. Validate against the actual template and test a small safe sample before bulk changes. Our service focuses on preparing and comparing records, not logging in and changing a customer's storefront without agreement.
